In the present study the physico-chemical conditions of five fresh water ponds in south-eastern Yemen were seasonally investigated during the year2010. Generally, the five ponds showed slight differences between each other, with no marked seasonal changes in their chemical conditions. Therefore, most of results were presented for one season. Water temperature followed that of air. The PH values of pond waters lies between 7.15 and 7.56, and 7.50- 8.20 for pond sediments with no apparent seasonal changes. The waters of the ponds were considered to be fresh, slightly alkaline and hard. DO in all the ponds generally showed a high values in winter and low values in summer. Total alkalinity of the waters in the ponds ranged between 110 and 1000 mg/l, the alkalinity in all the ponds was found to be due to carbonates and bicarbonates. Electric conductivity appeared to associate with calcium concentration. Calcium and magnesium among the cations, sulphates and chlorides among the anions were dominated in all the ponds. Generally, there were no apparent seasonal variations of significant value recorded particularly in the chemical condition of the five investigated ponds. | ||
