Abstract | ||
The aim of this study is to evaluate the self- sufficiency for main food groups in Iraq for the period 2003-2012, and to know the reality of food gap of these groups to formulate an idea about food security state for Iraq. The results showed that growth rate of some main groups (wheat, rice, maize, red meats, white meats, fish, eggs and dairy) production in Iraq was positive, while growth rate of (barely, potatoes, legumes, vegetables, fruits, sugar, oils & fats and) was negative for the study period. The level of main food group's security was different from one commodity group to another. Iraq had accumulated high percentage of self- sufficiency from barley and maize .The results also showed the dependency of Iraq on foreign markets to secure their needs from different commodities. It was recommended to depend on the calculation of real gap and not food gap to get an impression about the nutritional state of individual and to concentrate on health dimension of food security. | ||
