Abstract | ||
The objectives of this study are to evaluate the water quality of Tigris River within Missan Governorate eastern part of the Mesopotamia Plain. The study area suffering from land degradation due to sand creep, haphazardly irrigation habits which led to increase of saline soil and arid environmental conditions. Water samples were collected from surface water resources. The hydrochemical study involved the analysis of major cations and anions, hydrogen sulfide, and physical properties (pH, TDS). The results showed that most of the surface water is brackish, which is suitable for livestock, irrigation, and domestic purposes except for drinking. The result of water quality assessment revealed that increase in salt content is most likely;due to agricultural activities in the area. Surface runoff also increases transport of the chemical components into the river. The agricultural Land,salt flat and occurrence of ground water near the earth surface are contributed in release of cations and anions which led to increasing the salinity of the Tigris River. | ||
