Abstract | ||
The study aims at defining automation in libraries and information centers and the justifications for its usage in libraries and the problems which the traditional catalogs suffer from , then the study defines the concepts of database , reasons of their appearance , stages of their initiation and management and the practical stages of their design and construction according to WINISIS . A database for university library catalog has been designed to handle the problems of which the card catalog suffer from . The database included 23 fields covering the various bibliographic data of nine types of information carriers except periodicals which need special treatment . The study also included 16 figures and 2 tables . The study used the descriptive method to present the theoretical part of the study as well as the experimental method to explain the way of designing and constructing the database . The most prominent results of the study are : 1. The database included many input screens (the data lists) through which it will facilitate input operation and save time and efforts . 2. To overcome the problem of the limited retrieval points as the designed database has flexibility of information access through multiple access points (ISSN, call No, authors , title or any part of it .etc….) . 3. The capability of getting outputs either directly on the screen or as print format as bibliographies . The most important recommendations of the study are : 1. Initiating training sessions on WINISIS for library staff to upgrade their level of practical experience of treating with the systems and the designed database . 2. Automating other library procedures in the university libraries and not to restrict it on catalogs , i.e. . preparing to automate acquisition , circulation and other services . | ||
