Abstract | ||
This research includes a physical , chemical and biological study of the most important pollutants in some streams of the river Shat – al – Arab in the city of Basra . Regarding the physical side , the physical variables : The electric conductivity and the dissolved solid have been measured . As for the chemical variables , they included total nitrogen , phosphate and petroleum hydrocarbon . The biological variables included the biological requirement of oxygen . All of the variables proved to be beyond the permissible level of the drinking water except for tatal nitrogen and phosphate which were within the permissible level of the drinking water . The study has proved that there is obvious biological pollution caused by the existence of bacteria . This shoes that the water Shat – al – Arab is polluted and indrinkable at present , and there is a danger threatening the villages and areas lying on the banks of the river and whose people use its water for drinking . | ||
