Abstract Objective: To evaluate the role of certain variables (reproductive characteristics, family history) as risk factors for breast cancer Methodology: a case control study was conducted during the period between Jan 2009 and Jan 2010 in Nuclear Medicine, Medical City and Alkhadumia Teaching Hospitals. Results: It was found that the mean age of disease onset was 46.42 years with SD 9.49 years. The highest frequency of patients 43% had their disease onset at 40-49 year of age. Higher frequencies 25% of the studied cases were illiterate & 20.7% primary school level. The majority 69% of patients were unemployed housewives. The frequency of first full term pregnancy under 20 years of age was 20% , 23.7% in cases and controls respectively, and the frequency over 30 years of age was11.3%, 10% for cases and controls respectively with no significant differences. The cases which had three or more abortions comprised 11.4% in comparison with 6.7% of the controls; odd ratio was 2.21 with significant differences p. value 0.001. The risk of having breast cancer in first degree relatives was higher than the risk of second degree relatives, odd ratio of first degree relatives was 8.4 (3.55-20.81) versus 4.36(2.15-9.01) for the second degree relatives. Recommendations: Education campaign for self examination of the breast to increase the level of awareness of women. | ||
