Abstract This paper aims at studying a number of English declaration speech acts taken from conversations, dialogues, comments, statements and debates on some English TV (e.g. Al-Jazeera TV, BBC, City 7, among many others) . It also aims to set some felicity conditions and derive some semantic rules for determining whether the specified acts represent genuine speech acts of declaration category or not .The major aim is to translate these contextualized declaration speech acts from English into Arabic to see how they are realized in Arabic . Consequently , the study hypothesizes that: (1) there is no formal correspondence between the declaration speech acts in English and their realizations in Arabic, (2) these declaration speech acts pose problems for translators if and only if they are unaware of the basic characteristics of the acts under investigation. The main conclusion the study arrived at is that the translations of the acts in question have reflected a high degree of translatability in expressing the illocutionary force of the acts under analysis, and the most appropriate and accurate rendering is based on the compatibility between the contextual meaning and the illocutionary force of the utterances in question. | ||
