Effect of glucose on biofilm formation in Acinetobacter baumannii isolated from clinical sources | ||

| Abstract | ||
| Acinetobacter baumannii is a biofilm-forming bacterium . In this study, 21 isolates of A. baumannii out of 120 different clinical sample were diagnosed with the Vitek 2 device, which isolated from wound , burn, urine tract infection sputum and well of the hospital. Antibiotic susceptibility test showed that all A. baumannii isolates were 100% fully resistant to piperacillin and rifampicin; 85.5% of the isolates showed resistance to trimethoprim , 80% resistant to amikacin , 76% were resistant to levofloxacin , gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. While resistant for tobramycin, meropenem and imipenem, were 66.66%, 47% and 33.33% respectively. Result indicated that cultivated A. baumannii isolates in (T.S.B.) medium supplemented with 1% glucose enhanced the biofilm formation in 19 isolates stronger than cultivated with without glucose , when 3 isolates of A. baumannii formed power full ( strong ) and 5 forming moderate biofilm formation, while 11 isolate forming weak biofilm. As well es two out these 19 isolates where not formed the biofilm when cultivated in (T.S.B.) medium without glucose. Results of adding 5% glucose to (T.S.B.) medium showed that 19 isolates were formed biofilm , 10 out of 19 isolate formed moderate type of biofilm and (9) isolates formed weak type of biofilm. Whereas adding 8% of glucose to (T.S.B.) medium was inadequate for A. baumannii to form biofilm as 1% glucose . when 17 isolates formed biofilm, 3 out of 17 isolat isolates formed moderate biofilm, 14 formed biofilm weak biofilm formation and 4 isolate were negative for biofilm formation. | ||
