Abstract | ||
To say that literature is the mirror of nations reflects the relatedness of language with culture. Literary translation, then, inevitably involves cultural implications and this would be manifested in the lexical content, ideologies and ways of life in a given culture. The translator has to follow a translation technique to adapt certain cultural aspects of the source language (SL) in accordance with the norms of the target language (TL) audience. The present paper is an attempt to examine the vitality of House’s (1997) notions of overt translation and covert translation which is upheld via the use of cultural filter in literary translation from Arabic into English on a corpus of data taken from Nageeb Mahfouz’s ‘’ Midaq Ally’’ and its English translation as represented by Le Gassick. | ||
