| Background: Pregnancy complications are highly related to parity and continue to be of interest to obstetricians, increasing parity increased the risk of pregnancy complication. Aim of the study: This study was aimed to figure out the characteristic of grand multiparity, and find out reasons for last pregnancy, as well as knowledge and utilization of family planning methods, antenatal and natal complications regarding mother and newborn in a sample of Grand-Multiparous women at Al – Yarmouk Teaching Hospital. Subjects & Methods: The study was a cross sectional (hospital based) conducted at Obstetrics and Gynecological department at Al – Yarmouk Teaching Hospital in Baghdad during the period from first of April to 30th of July 2015, data was collected via direct interview with the participants using a special structural questionnaire form. Results: During the study period 300 grand multiparous women out of 1128 deliveries at Obstetrics and Gynecological department of Al- Yarmouk Teaching Hospital were included in the study. Mean age of the women was 33.2+ 5.6 years. The most common age at marriage was (14-17) year with an average of 17.4 year, less than half of studied women get their first pregnancy before 18 years. Most of participants were housewives (97.7%) lived in a rural (peripheral) area & had low education level. More than half of them (59.3%) were Para four, while (15.7%) para fifth, para ten constitute (0.7%). About 70% of the studied women had knowledge about family planning methods but only 23% of them used family planning methods. Conceive by mistake and failed contraception were the most common reasons for the current pregnancy (28%, 19%) respectively. Anemia was the most common antenatal complication (40%), hypertensive disorder of pregnancy was the 2nd most common (23.3%) complication. The rate of cesarean section reported in this study was (65.7%). Regarding the outcome of pregnancy, the results showed that (93%) were live newborn while 14% of newborn had low birth weight, still birth constituted (7%), congenital anomalies seen in 2.7% of newborn. Conclusion:-Grand multiparty is still considered an obstetric challenge as it has many complications for both mother and fetus. | ||
