Abstract | ||
The research deals with the concept of metalanguage , its importance in linguistics , and what makes linguists include it in their linguistic theories. The study looks at other scientific disciplines that linguists have referred to in deriving this concept. In addition, it sheds light on the problems with the term metalanguage in formulating the language of a discourse when it is confused with the discourse topic. The research also distinguishes between the two terms : metalanuage and metadiscourse. Furthermore, the research gives an evaluation of the Arabic linguistic counterpart of this concept that is used to represent this term. In the second section, the research examines this concept in Arabic linguistic heritage by looking at some Arabic collections, such as the famous sources, Al-Amali book , and some books of principles of Islamic jurisprudence which demonstrate this concept. The Arabs approached to this concept when they described language as a discourse generated by talking about the language in the same language. That view has the greatest impact on the ancient Arab linguists who were able to distinguish between language and metalanguage. | ||
