Abstract | ||
The paper investigates Mary Webb's Precious Bane and the reasons which led to the urging interest in folklore and the almost fading traditions of early 20th-century England, analyzing at the same time the dividing line between religion and pagan practices which are received from older generations without any conscious retrieval and meditation of the consequences of these practices. The novel is about Prudence Sarn whose lip is hare-shot and is, thus, considered a witch because of it, and how her story represents a fairy-tale, since she waits for her knight in white armour to deliver her from her miseries and distress. | ||
