The holy Karbala city is located in the west of the Euphrates river ,on the edge of the desert and the centre of the sedimentary area . To its north – west it is bordered by Al- Anbar city , to its east , it is bordered by archeological Babylon , to its west , it is bordered by the western desert and to its south – west it is bordered by Al – Heera city , the capital of Al- Manathira . Different opinions have been given about the origin of its name but the city has become well – known just after the martyrdom of Imam Husain ( p.b. u. h) in 61 A.H . In the last part of the mid- nineteenth century , Karbala city was a district administratively part of Baghdad city . After the arrival of Midhat Pasha and his being the governor of Baghdad Willayat City in ( 1896- 1872) , he made it a Liwa' which was not linked or related to him i.e as districts but the situation was changed in the following years as districts and regions were directed by and connected to him . The basic and most important governmental institutions inside Karbala was the provincial governor ( Al- Mutasarif) institution who headed the state (Liwa') in addition to the accountant and ( the edition manager ) who was responsible for the official records and the municipality office . The district commissioner and the director posts were found in the districts and the headquarters . Al- Hindiyah , Al- Najaf and Al- Razzazah districts were linked and related to Karbala but Al- Musayab and Shifatha were considered headquarters | ||
