This study was carried out in the station for ruminant research of the State Board for Agriculture Research, Ministry of Agricultural in Abu Ghraib (23 km east of Baghdad) for the period of 1/10/2010 to 1/6/2012. The aim of this study is to examine the factors affecting milk composition (protein, fat and lactose) in Turkish Awassi sheep. The study included 2213 records of 189 ewes for two production seasons. The General linear model (GLM) within the SAS computer package was used to analyze the data. The overall means for the percentage of protein, fat and lactose were 5.09, 5.45, 5.69%, respectively. The resulted showed that age of ewe and a stage of lactation had a highly significant effect (p<0.01) on milk composition (protein, fat and lactose), Also a type of birth had a highly significant effect (p<0.01) only on percentage of fat but no on others composition. A sex of lambs had a significant effect (p<0.05) on percentage of fat and lactose but no effect on protein. Month of lambing had a highly significant effect (p<0.01) on protein and fat percentage and significant effect (p<0.05) on lactose. Year of production had a highly significant effect (p<0.01) on fat and lactose while a significant effect (p<0.05) on protein percentage. Regression of lactose percentage on milk yield in same week was significant (p<0.05), while the regression of protein percentage on ewe weight at birth was highly significant (p< 0.01). | ||
